A recent report by road safety charity Brake and insurer Direct Line reveals that over two thirds of drivers are putting other road users at risk by breaking road traffic laws.
The report was based on a survey of 1,000 drivers across the UK and found that:
- 99% thought that their driving was as safe as that of an average driver;
- 69% admitted that they had broken road traffic laws;
- 35% said that they broke the laws because they believed that they could “handle it”;
- 35% said that they had broken the law through inattention;
- 1% know that they are taking risks in terms of the way in which they are breaking the law.
According to Brake and Direct Line, risk taking behaviour on the part of drivers contributes significantly to the number of casualties on the road. They have called for a ramping up of the law enforcement agency response to unlawful driving, with increased funding and action to tighten up the penalty points system.
They also believe that the recent increase in fixed penalty fines to £100 is insufficient and are calling on the Government to push them up further to between £500 and £1,000.
